What do we mean by Rental Cars?
The term "rental car" refers to a campervan/motorhome weighing less than 6 tonnes, SUV, sedan, station wagon, hatchback, people mover, coupe, convertible, four-wheel drive, or minibus leased through a registered motor vehicle rental business or agency.
This coverage applies if you: rent a car, are the nominated driver on the rental car agreement and have comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the rental car for the duration of the rental period.
If the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen while in your possession during your trip, coverage is given for the lesser of the rental vehicle insurance excess or the repair expenses to the rental automobile for which you become liable. You will be required to provide the final loss/repair report in order to support your claim.
Driving in Australia or New Zealand
Before you set out on your trip consider the following:
Weather and Road Conditions: Before embarking on a road trip, make sure you're up to date on the weather and road conditions in your area. Check the weather forecast and make a list of any places that are expecting adverse weather conditions, fires or floods.
Black Ice: Black ice is a thin layer of ice covering the ground that appears black, making it incredibly difficult for drivers to see. It is usually found along side rivers and streams, mostly in shady or cooler locations. Since black ice will cause drivers to lose control, it is critical to drive cautiously.
Chains: For driving on snow and ice it is important to have chains accessible when renting a vehicle. Most rental providers will supply you with chains and show you how to install them. When using ropes, ensure that they are properly attached to the driving wheels (e.g. for a front-wheel drive car, chains or ropes go on the front wheels). After installing the chains, drive a short distance and double-check them to ensure they are secure. Also, it is a great tip to remember to have warm gloves and a torch with you.
Water: Ensure you always have water for hydrating yourself and on a hot trip sometimes you may need some for the vehicle too.
Navigation options: Maps and GPS units are always great, but if you have a smart phone you have the worlds best directions with you as long as you have mobile reception and a full battery!
